435 appearances, 280 goals, but only tonight can Harry Kane become a Tottenham legend
When a young Harry Kane joined the Tottenham academy in 2004, he no doubt dreamed of Champions League nights in North London, saw himself scoring the winner, believed he would become a Spurs legend.
After 20 years at the club, 435 first team appearances, 280 goals, 62 assists, and countless renditions of "He's one of our own", tonight is the night when that dream might finally come true. Just, not in the famous lilywhite of Tottenham Hotspur.
Popular opinion will tell you that, of course Harry Kane is already a Tottenham legend, and that might be right, but it's not certain, it's not set in stone — it's not even set in bronze, just ask Waltham Forest council who have hid away a statue of Kane in a storage unit for more than five years.
For all the good Harry Kane did at Spurs, he doesn't have a moment, something to point to as a memory shared among all in which he is central.
He scored an out-of-this-world goal from near the corner flag in a North London derby. Spurs drew the match.
He bullied Pep's Manchester City in a dominant league victory. Months earlier he had been pining for the Sky Blue's.
Tottenham made an unlikely and remarkable run to the Champions League final. Harry Kane barely took part.
Kane played Chelsea off the park on New Year's Day, 2015. Chelsea won the League Cup final 2-0 against Spurs two months later.
And so it's come to this. Eight months after walking out on a 20 year relationship. Eight months after heading to Bavaria in the search of some guaranteed silverware (which, ironically, has not yet materialised). And eight months after breaking the hearts of Spurs supporters the world over. Harry Kane has one last chance to become a Tottenham legend.
